The American Civil War stands the nation’s most defining moment after its founding. Two sections of the country, North & South broke apart and fought a bloody civil war that lasted four full years and cost over 600,000 lives on the battlefield alone. Over 4,000,000 slaves were freed by the war and extended full rights of citizenship, fundamentally altering American ideas of who enjoyed the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution. And, once and for all, the nation became a nation of the people (rather than of the states).

By any measure, the Civil War is dramatic and exciting to study.

Please enjoy this opportunity to do so! I know I will.
